Real-time high-def streaming. 5G allows drones to transmit HD footage 100 times faster than 4G, providing pilots with high quality imaging in real time. This improvement in real-time imaging quality could be useful for a number of commercial use cases, including inspections, public safety, agriculture, conservation, news reporting.

A 5G network can boost the utility of drones in a number of ways:

  • 5G will enable drones to transmit high-definition footage in real-time. 5G's millisecond latency and data speeds up to 100 times faster than 4G allows drones to transmit high-quality footage to operators on the ground. This enables drones to be used for functions like infrastructure safety inspections, where the drone operator must be able to see patches of rust or smalls cracks, for instance.

  • Drones with a 5G connection can use AI to more efficiently complete complicated tasks. The ability to quickly transmit data enables drones to be enhanced with AI and outperform drones with a 4G connection. For example, a drone with computer vision can rapidly scan items in a warehouse and recognize patterns, which can improve efficiency and free up human workers to do more complicated tasks.

  • 5G's low latency will enable precise tracking of drone fleets. As more drones begin to fly, stricter monitoring is needed to ensure they don't drift into restricted areas or crash, causing property damage or injuries. 5G's low latency can minimize lag so operators can avoid collisions and better coordinate takeoffs and landings.

This real-time transmission of a drone’s actual location in the air could help improve safety by allowing for more accurate tracking of drones and drone fleets.

How is 5G/LTE network different from WiFi?

  1. At a high level, there are three key differences between 5G/LTE and Wi-Fi. The first difference is that wi-fi uses an unscheduled channel sharing mechanism, whereas 5G/LTE both use a scheduled channel sharing mechanism. The added control scheduled access means that 5G / LTE networks can deliver much higher quality of service, delivering the right data to the right client at the right time.

  2. The second big difference is power. Wi-Fi uses unlicensed spectrum that is capped at 4 watts of output power for most use cases by regulation. Whereas 5G/LTE networks mainly use licensed, or license shared access spectrum (like CBRS) which have higher power limits. In the case of CBRS, the transmit power limit is 25 times higher than a 20 MHz Wi-Fi channel. Licensed spectrum limits are usually significantly higher still. That power means clear reception farther away from the base station.

  3. The third key difference is security. 5G/LTE networks provide superior protection of user and control data compared to Wi-Fi networks. The use of physical security like SIM cards and mutual authentication of network and devices, provide additional protections over and above what is offered by Wi-Fi.

"The biggest benefit of 5G is not faster speed, but efficiencies unlocked through software-centric architecture. Coupled with open source and cloud-native design principles, software-driven 5G networks will have an order-of-magnitude lower OPEX [Operating expenses]," said Boris Renski, FreedomFi's co-founder and CEO.
